Kwibuka32: Rwandans in Yiwu Encouraged to Know Their History and Combat Genocide Denial
On 25 April, Rwandans and friends of Rwanda from Yiwu, Hangzhou, and Shanghai gathered in Yiwu for the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda (Kwibuka32).
The event was attended by Rwanda’s Ambassador to China, James Kimonyo, and a representative of the Yiwu Municipal Government, Mr. Zhu Gaoming.
In his remarks, Ambassador Kimonyo called on the youth to learn and deeply understand their country’s history, while standing firmly against genocide denial. He encouraged participants to reflect on the enduring significance of remembrance and its role in safeguarding the future.
"We remember to honor the truth of our history, to stand firmly against denial, and to safeguard the future through unity and vigilance."
The President of the Rwandan Community living in China (RCA China), Ms. Hatungimana Media, highlighted the important role of the diaspora in preserving Rwanda’s history and ensuring it is passed on to future generations. She emphasized the shared responsibility to actively resist genocide denial in all its forms.
The event featured poetic recitations and a documentary illustrating how the genocide was planned and executed, providing a moment for reflection and reaffirming a collective commitment to remembrance and the fight against genocide ideology.
