Bamboo Resources Play Important Role in Environmental Protection – Ambassador Mchumo
From 7th to 9th June 2019, Rwanda Embassy showcased ‘Made in Rwanda’ products from Bamboo species at the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) Pavilion in Beijing.
At the invitation of the Chinese Government, INBAR built a pavilion garden at the International Horticultural Expo 2019, Beijing for member States exhibition and promotional activities.
INBAR is a multilateral development organization that promotes environmentally sustainable development using bamboo and rattan.
Rwanda joined the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan Organization in 2006.
Rwanda is among other forty - five (45) Member States invited at the INBAR pavilion to showcase cultural, tourism opportunities and products from bamboo species, under the theme, ‘An introduction to the land of a thousand hills’.
At the garden pavilion, Rwanda embassy showcased ‘Made in Rwanda’ products from bamboo species, tourism opportunities and RwandAir's upcoming maiden flight to Guangzhou on 18 June 2019, which attracted a huge number of visitors.
INBAR Director General, H.E Ambassador Ali Mchumo graced the opening ceremony.
“Bamboo and rattan resources play important role in environmental protection; livelihood improvement, biodiversity conservation and promotion of international trade are of great significance to the sustainable development of the world bamboo and rattan industry,” Ambassador Mchumo said at the opening ceremony.
Rwanda is among the beneficiaries of the world bamboo and rattan industry. Ambassador Mchumo added.
According to the INBAR DG, “the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization together with the Member States will make full use of the International Horticulture Expo 2019 platform, to organize a variety of public cultural activities, showcase the charm of bamboo and rattan, and to promote international cultural exchanges and cooperation.”
At the ceremony, Ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda to China, Ambassador Charles Kayonga said that Rwanda has seen positive vibrant changes since joined INBAR.
“Rwanda has taken a proactive approach to put environment and climate change at the heart of the country’s policies. Bamboo species are among other natural resources that helped Rwanda to embark on the environmental conservation policies,” Rwanda envoy to China noted.
Bamboo forest ecosystem provides Rwanda's mountain gorillas with good habitats and food to survive. Government of Rwanda attaches great importance of cooperation with international bamboo and rattan organizations. Ambassador Kayonga added.
