Rwandan Community Living in China Urged to Fight the Genocide Ideology During Kwibuka 31 Commemorative Events
The Embassy joined Rwandans and friends of Rwanda living in various cities for the 31st commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The events which were held on different dates, attracted Rwandans and friends of Rwanda from six different locations including Hangzhou, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Xi’an, and Changsha.
They provided a platform for collective remembrance, reflection, and recommitment to the principles of national unity, security, resilience and a common vision that should ensure a meaningful universal never again.
The Embassy officials who joined the communities at the six locations underscored the critical role of Rwandans living abroad in preserving the memory of the Genocide against the Tutsi and advocating for its remembrance worldwide. They emphasized the importance of commemorative events in ensuring that the atrocities of the past are never forgotten and that future generations learn from the mistakes of our history. The diplomats urged participants to work together and actively combat the genocide denial.
The country is counting on you to confront the ideology of genocide propagandists and their sponsors in this era of the internet and social media, where everyone has the tools to share the true story of our history. It is your responsibility to actively engage online, to denounce and refute fake news, and to challenge those who use digital platforms to deny or minimize the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. Your generation should not bear the burden of the misdeeds of past generations; instead, you must take decisive action to combat genocide denialism in all its forms.
For their part, Rwandans living in different cities reaffirmed their commitment to honoring the memory of the victims and working together to combat genocide ideology and foster unity, contributing to the country’s development. “When you do not know where you come from, you cannot know where you are heading to. We are committed to learning from our past and ensuring that what happened never happens again,” they declared.
Ever since we were given a platform to speak, genuine content to display and while we understand our role and responsibility, we are ready to demonstrate our patriotism through honoring our solemn bonds using digital platforms to tell the true history of our country to the world.
