Rwandans and Friends of Rwanda in China Commemorated 1994 Genocide Against The Tutsi.
Rwandan community and friends of Rwanda in Beijing and its vicinity converged at the Embassy of Rwanda for the 24th Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi. The event attracted many diplomats, officials from different embassies and of Rwanda. While speaking to the guests, Rwanda's Ambassador to China, Charles Kayonga thanked them for attending calling the solidarity "demonstration of the common will to maintain a protracted fight against genocide".
The Ambassador appreciated the fact that earlier this year the United Nations General Assembly approved its earlier decision designating the 7th April as “the International Day of reflection on the Genocide against the Tutsi". He noted that this is "another victory against the genocidaire and revisionists who are always looking for opportunity to confuse the world about the nature of the genocide that happened in Rwanda".
His Excellency Sikonina Victor, Ambassador of Madagascar and also the Dean of African Ambassadors in Beijing, reminded the audience that "In 1994, Rwanda passed through the worst moments, a collective drama of atrocities and unimaginable tragedy to mankind". He praised the leadership of Rwanda for raising the people "from the holes of a grief to achieve significant progress in terms of poverty reduction and balance of power-which is the rebirth of the hope of living together in peaceful coexistence".
Ingabire Marie Claire, a genocide survivor currently doing a masters program gave testimony of her narrow survival in former Murambi of Eastern Rwanda narrating how the RPF soldiers had found them surrounded by killer militias and rescued them from certain death. She praised "the good leadership of our government today that also stopped the genocide, who brought unity and reconciliation among Rwandans”.
The diaspora community in other areas of China also commemorated by coming together in school halls or renting premises in hotels. Commemoration activities will go on throughout the next one hundred days.
Among other community areas that joined together to start the commemoration are Guangzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu, Wuhan, Guilin, Gansu, Qinzhou, Xuzhou, Jilin, Shenyang, Changchun and Changsha.
The community leaders shared the genuine history of genocide, its roots and impact to the Rwandan community.
In all cities, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the victims of the Genocide. Students from different schools were argued to be responsible for building a different image from those who got involved and committed the 1994 genocide against Tutsi.
Education is a key in fighting the genocide ideology. Educators and students should carefully and delicately deal with issues about genocide. “Education is one of the platforms to learn causes of genocide and fight against its ideology, we must seriously embrace our roles in the fight against genocide” community leaders told the students.
